On writing them

The rule we settled on after a bad experience in 2018: no plot summary past the first twenty minutes. A note that tells you what happens is a note that has done the film's work for it.

A note from last season

Norwegian first feature, March 2026

Shot over three winters on a budget that wouldn't cover a week of a British production. Watch the interiors: almost every scene indoors is lit from a single practical source, which is a money decision that became the film's whole visual argument.

The director had made documentaries for a decade before this, and it shows in the patience with faces. Where an ordinary drama would cut, this holds, and the holding is where the film lives.

Context: made during a period when Norwegian film funding shifted towards regional production outside Oslo. Several of the crew had never worked on a feature.

Finnish, eleven lines of dialogue

People arrived expecting an endurance test and stayed for the argument afterwards, which ran until closing time. The film is funnier than its reputation; the silence is comic timing rather than austerity, and once the room worked that out it laughed a good deal.
