Valhalla ReelsNordic cinema, screened monthly in Leeds

About

Two of us run it. Ingrid Sørbø moved to Leeds from Bergen in 2011 and works in translation. Danny Whitaker teaches film at a further education college. Neither of us is paid for any of this.

How it started

A conversation in 2016 about how a city the size of Leeds could go a whole year without a single Nordic film on a screen outside a festival. The first screening had eleven people in it, nine of whom we knew personally.

The name

A joke that stuck, and one we're mildly embarrassed by now — it suggests a narrower idea of Nordic culture than anything we actually show. Changing it would break ten years of people finding us, so it stays.

How it's run

An informal club, not a company or a charity. Membership money covers licences and hall hire, the accounts are pinned up at the venue, and there's a surplus most seasons that goes towards the projector.

Volunteers

Four people help regularly — door, tea, chairs, and the person who knows how to persuade the projector to talk to a laptop. We could always use another. It's two hours a month.
